“Pray EP” is the latest release from NYC’s X Harlow. This 4 song release expands on Justin Schmidt’s earlier albums “Cathars” and “Anchorite” with medieval harmony and instrumentation set to aggressive electronic rhythms, but with a higher energy and lyricism than previous works. The material is poetic and stylistically challenging but also the most musically accessible, forgoing Schmidt’s usual meditativeness for pop mixing and upfront vocal delivery. Whereas former releases coupled social issues like police violence and mass death with deep ambient introspection, “Pray EP” opts for a confrontational vocal style this time around, expressing anger over drug-related death and late pandemic alienation. Schmidt wrote the EP while trying to make sense of the countless overdoses and suicides in both close circles and underground music scenes across the US in 2021. The rhythms combine industrial clangs and explosions with trap hi hats and forceful snares, while the musicality still pulls from medieval styles of choir voices and flutes. Tied together by lilting vocals over massive sub bass, “Pray EP” further develops X Harlow’s distinct innovation of combining Gregorian chant, emo rap and industrial, bringing the genres together while blurring their boundaries.
